SPANISH SANGRIA... a tasty recipe to try!
Hola y Feliz Viernes amigos! This blog post is coming to you from Madrid, Spain, and as you read this Bruce and I are on a train to the north coast to begin our 6-day hike.
We have been having the best time on our trip… We saw some of the big sites and had a few super fun activities in Barcelona and then it was on to Madrid to see Iciar and meet her family. To be honest, we were all a bit nervous, but it has gone so well and it has been great to see where and how she lives here in Spain. We are feeling fully acclimated, as we eat lunch at 2pm followed by an afternoon rest and dinner at 9 or 10pm… If you are shocked by this, you aren’t alone, but it has been pretty easy to get used to!
One of our fun activities in Barcelona was a cooking class, where we made Sangria and Paella. We first walked to a local market to learn how to pick fresh seafood and then returned to the classroom kitchen with our fresh picks to make our dinner. Learning how to cook local dishes, with local ingredients, by local chefs is quickly becoming one of my favorite activities while on vacation and this class was no exception! The Sangria was especially tasty, so today I’m going to share the secrets we learned with you... If you are feeling adventurous, give it a try!
SPANISH SANGRIA
Ingredients:
1 bottle red wine (preferably Rioja or Tempranillo)
250 ml of juice (we used a mixture of orange, peach, and pineapple)
Cut fruit (such as apples, berries, and citrus)
Rum (or other sweet liquor such as Cointreau or brandy)
Carbonated drink (such as Cava or carbonated cider)
Ice
Directions:
Pour the bottle of wine into a large pitcher. If it is a dry wine, you can add a bit of brown sugar to sweeten it.
Add the juice to the wine, then add your cut fruit.
Next, add a 5-second pour of the liquor to your pitcher. Stir well.
REFRIGERATE FOR 24 HOURS TO LET FLAVORS BLEND TOGETHER!
When ready to serve, put ice in individual cups. Pour Sangria over ice (but be sure to leave about two fingers of space for your carbonated beverage!)
Make sure each cup gets some cut fruit when distributing the Sangria.
Then, add your carbonated beverage to the top.
Stir and Enjoy!
